The Junior Literary Awards return to Ballina Salmon Festival!

Mayo and Ballina, in particular has much to be proud of in terms of local creative writing, and the Ballina Salmon Festival Junior Literary Awards have been revived this year to celebrate this talent, and to foster and encourage a love of writing among our young people – which ultimately contributes to a vibrant local literary culture.

The Awards, which were a feature of the festival in the past and are being revived this year by committee members Ger Hogan and Lizann Gorman will focus initially on primary school writers.

The awards have been kindly sponsored by Paul Brennan, Solicitor, Eason Ballna, Creative Writing Mayo and An Teanga Bheo School of Irish, Ballina.

Who can enter? 

The Junior Literary Awards are open to children under 13 years and the categories include both short story and poetry.

Awards will be made in both English and Gaeilge.

How to enter

Entry forms can be downloaded here or collected from the Ballina Salmon Festival office.

Entries are to be submitted to the Ballina Salmon Festival Office on Pearse Street by Saturday 1st July, and shortlisting will take place the following week. The successful shortlist will be published on the Festival Website and local media outlets, and parents/guardians will be contacted directly.

The cost of entry is €2, or €5 for three entries.

Prize-giving Night

A prize-giving ceremony will take place in Ballina Arts Centre at 7pm on Thursday 6th July. Winners will have the opportunity to present their work in front of an audience.

 

Judges

The judges this year are local writer Helen Falconer for short fiction, poet Terry McDonagh for poetry and Orla ni Slaic of An Teanga Bheo for all Irish entries.

 

Prizes

There will be a number of prizes awarded on the night including:

  • A workshop in An Teanga Bheo School of Irish
  • A voucher for a winning school for entry to Tumble Jungle
  • A Workshop in Creative Writing Pass, E
  • Easons Book Vouchers and
  • The winning title of the Junior Bard of Ballina.

Watch our young musical talent on stage daily at The Core Stage!

 

The Core is delighted to announce The Core Stage at Ballina Salmon Festival 2017.  Over the duration of the festival, there will be daily concerts in the town centre,  featuring talented members of The Core and the various Music Generation Mayo programmes.  The stage, which is generously sponsored by Sligo Retail Park will also feature young performers from throughout Mayo, as The Core aims to provide a platform for young local musicians.

Music Generation Mayo’s latest programme ‘The Core‘, a creative space for budding young musicians opened its doors in Ballina Arts Centre in November 2016 and has been a bustling hive of musical activity since. With over 30 (and counting!) active members from across the county using the rehearsal facility, taking part in camps, industry workshops, regular performance opportunities such as monthly open mics, Facebook Live events and musical showcases it is a great place for young people to express themselves and work on developing their music.

Music For Little Ones Workshops at Ballina Salmon Festival

As part of this year’s children’s arts programme, we are delighted to be offering a morning of special music workshops for the under 4s. 

Each workshop will last for 40 minutes and parents are invited to come along as well and to join in!

Activities will include, finger plays, bouncing songs, action songs, rhymes, creative movement and instrument playing to name but a few.  These are all introduced through play and performance using a variety of colourful and multi-sensory props as well as finger and hand puppets.

 

This will be a great way to introduce music to young children, as well as for parents who might like to continue the music-making at home too.

The workshops are facilitated by Miriam McDonnell.  Miriam is a qualified Colourstrings Kindergarten Music teacher and teaches music in Alexandra College, Dublin.  She is the founder of Music for Little Ones, a specialised music school offering music classes to young children and their parents.

Circus Workshop for Children with Babcock & Bobbins

 

The inimitable Babcock and Bobbins, juggling supremos,  have performed all over Ireland, from Belfast to Ballina and from Coleraine to Cork.

Now, they’re coming back to Ballina with their super mix of traditional circus, slapstick comedy and circus skills, which included Fire Juggling, Stilt Walking, Rola Bola, Giraffe Unicycle, Fire Breathing and more!

This workshop incorporates a great mix of juggling, circus games and lots and lots of laughs.

Local artist Alice Dixon will work with children in the surroundings of Ballina Arts Centre to make wonderful, colourful papier mâché creations to bring home.

Dance teacher Ciara Ginty runs  Ciara’s Danceblast, where dance classes for children  are taught by experienced, friendly and approachable dancers. No experience is required and during Ciara’s classes you can learn Hip Hop, Contemporary, Popping,  Locking, Breakdancing and more. Ciara also runs shows and competitions, all with the aim of developing team, friendship and social skills. According to Ciara, “Dancing is the best way to boost confidence, be creative and have fun!”

As part of Ballina Salmon Festival Ciara offers a FREE Danceblast workshop for children aged 6-15 years.

Reeling In The Years Workshops at The Jackie Clarke Collection

Learn about the Ballina Salmon Festival in years gone by at this fabulous Reeling In The Years Workshops at The Jackie Clarke Collection.

Each child attending this creative workshop will walk away with a lovely story about the Ballina Salmon Festival, having created their very own newspaper front page, using images and articles taken from our the Jackie Clarke Collection’s newspaper collection over the past 53 years.

The workshop is being run by the Jackie Clarke Collection through their community and education departments and children will create their newspaper – “The Clarke Chronicle” – using images and articles taken from our WP newspaper collection for the last 53 years (Ballina Salmon Festival is of course 53 years old!)

A new addition to the 2017 festival programme, this fun Art Creation through Recycling Workshop in Ballina Arts Centre, run by local artist Jennifer Heavey fosters children’s creativity while teaching them about recycling and the environment, using old household materials to make works of art to take home.
