Ballina is a town with a colorful fascinating history dating back thousands of years. What better way to learn about the history than to embark on a historical walking tour of Ballina with one of our very own local historians.
During her daily tour, local historian Carmel Hughes will take you on a journey through Ballina’s market town history, from the ‘Dolmen of the Four Maols’, dating from 2000BC, to our famine burial site, to the General Humbert Monument, which commemorates Humbert’s march through Mayo from his landing into Kilcummin, to the house in which the first female President of Ireland, Mary Robinson, was born.
Along the way, Carmel will also point out things of interest such as examples of our beautiful Georgian architecture, and Ballina’s stunning ecclesiastical ruins. Hear also about Ardnaree (Ard na Riagh) and how Ballina wasn’t always all in Co Mayo !!
Please wear comfortable shoes and bring rain gear, just in case of the Irish weather!
**Please be advised there will be NO Historical walking tour of Ballina on Wednesday 12th July “National Heritage Day”
