Ballina Salmon Festival 2024: Celebrating 60 Years of Community, Culture & Celebration

July 2024, the town of Ballina came alive like never before, as it proudly celebrated a truly historic milestone — the 60th anniversary of the Ballina Salmon Festival, Ireland’s longest-running community festival.

Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the River Moy, and Ballina based along the Wild Atlantic Way, the 2024 festival welcomed an incredible 250,000 visitors to the town over eight spectacular days. From dawn to dusk (and long after), Ballina buzzed with energy, pride, music, and joy — proving once again why this beloved event is the beating heart of the town’s summer.

A Week to Remember in 2024.

What started in 1964 as a humble celebration of Ballina’s famous River Moy and its world-class salmon fishing has grown into one of the wests most anticipated annual festivals. And the 60th edition was nothing short of magical.

Throughout the week, the streets overflowed with laughter, colour, and community spirit. Families enjoyed fun-filled children’s days, music echoed from every corner of the town, and the rich cultural heritage of Mayo was on full display. The fireworks show lit up the skies in a dazzling display that captured the awe of locals and visitors alike, with music and dance by Moffatt School if Dance and the well know Cronin. Heritage Day took us all on a beautiful trip down memory lane.

Driven by Volunteers, Powered by Passion

Behind every great festival is an even greater community. This year, over 300 dedicated volunteers gave their time, energy, and hearts to bring the festival to life. Their commitment — often months in the making — is what makes the Ballina Salmon Festival so uniquely special.

From organising events, supporting logistics, and welcoming visitors with open arms, these community champions are the soul of the festival. Their passion ensures that this tradition not only continues but thrives — growing stronger with each passing year.

A Celebration of Ballina and Beyond

For one unforgettable week in July, Ballina was more than a town — it was a stage, a playground, a cultural showcase, and a meeting point for people from all walks of life. Locals, returning expats, first-time visitors, and international tourists came together in celebration — of tradition, of togetherness, and of the enduring magic that only the Ballina Salmon Festival can deliver.

The 60th anniversary was a powerful reminder of what makes this festival so important — not just to Ballina, but the friiends, family and diaspora of Co Mayo. It’s a festival that unites generations, showcases the best of the west, and reminds us all that community spirit is truly timeless.

Thank You to Our Valued Sponsors and Local Businesses

As we celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Ballina Salmon Festival, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to the incredible businesses and sponsors whose generous support made this milestone event possible.

Without the financial backing, hosting a festival of this scale—especially in such a landmark year—would simply not be possible. In 2024, the organisers set out to pull out all the stops to mark this special occasion, and thanks to the business contributions, the festival was able to do just that.

The support not only helped keep the festival tradition alive, but also strengthened the town and community spirit, it boosted local pride, and created an unforgettable memory for all who attend.

From all of us involved in the Ballina Salmon Festival—thank you!
